Michigan SERA Seeks New Legislative Liaison

The Michigan State Employee Retirees Association Coordinating Council is searching for a Legislative Liaison. The Legislative Liaison will serve as the primary spokesperson for the Coordinating Council before executive, legislative and administrative bodies, keep the membership informed of legislation and other issues which may impact seniors/retirees, advise the Coordinating Council leadership on positions to take on the issues, write a monthly report and read various publications on a routine basis to keep updated on the political pundits.

We are looking for a person who demonstrates knowledge of and appreciates all 3 branches of government. Who has work experience in interfacing with any or all branches of government. One who could express views both orally and in written form and has a flexible daily schedule to attend meetings. Experience in a state agency, testifying before legislative committees and knowledge of the Office of Retirement Services and Civil Service. Experience in public speaking, personal relationships with legislators, legislative staff and strong advocacy skills.

The person will be required to register with the Secretary of State as a Lobbyist agent and file a semi-annual report to them detailing activities and expenditures. Review the status of key legislation and independently decide what legislative activities to attend and provide input. Make calls to individual legislators to explain the Coordinating Councils position. Keep the Coordinating Council and membership updated on the status of important legislation, prepare talking points/information to members to use when contacting their legislators.  Write a monthly report for the Chair and Vice Chair of the Coordinating Council. Provide verbal reports with SERA chapters when invited and for the Coordinating Council meetings.

This position comes with a yearly stipend and would receive 1099.
