November 2024Well, the elections are finally over. Many retirees are pleased and many are not pleased. No matter how you vote, thank you for doing so. I think we can all agree that we are relieved to see political signs, hear political TV/radio ads and listen to phone calls/texts no longer. The Michigan House and Senate elected Republican majorities. Please read Mary Pollock’s Capitol News column for her views on the election. I have taken the liberty of reprinting the following from the State Employees Charitable Campaign (SECC): “The State Employees Charitable Campaign was created in 1987 to combine all charitable appeals and giving drives into one annual event. Participation in the annual SECC means assurance that the most efficient and consistent pathway is being used for state employees to support our annual tradition of charitable giving. The active solicitation period offers State of Michigan employees the opportunity to give through bi-weekly payroll deduction or one-time gifts to the charities of their choice. State of Michigan retirees can donate anytime throughout the year via check or credit card. The Retirees Campaign typically kicks off in August.” If you want more information about SECC (or a list of charities) you can go to their website at www.misecc.org or call 517-664-9800. Although we no longer must deal with political adds we still have to put up with everything we see and hear about Insurance companies trying to entice us to join their Medicare plans. I urge you to disregard all those attempts to lure you to join other insurance programs. In the event you choose to enroll in a different plan than the State’s Medicare Plan it may take you weeks or months to return to the State’s plan. We are in the process of hiring a new website manager. He will be looking into a new website design that may be easier to navigate. We hope to have a new web manager in the new year. Joy has been our website manager for over 13 years. I am more than satisfied with the work she has accomplished for SERA. Editor’s note: Bob Kopasz is Chair of the Michigan SERA Council. He may be reached at P.O. Box 692, Mt. Morris, MI 48458; phone 810/240-8380. |
