Chair Talk

July 2009

HB 4072 is currently in the Retirement Subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee. The bill has not been scheduled for a hearing as yet. The main reason we object to the bill is that it apparently gives unilateral authority to the Office of Retirement Systems to select and administer the retiree health care plan. We believe that if the bill is passed, SERA would have little (if any) input into any changes in a health care plan for retirees. We encourage all retirees to contact their State Senator and express their opposition to HB 4072.

The August SERA Coordinating Council meeting will be held in the Escanaba area. Lunch will cost $16.00 per person. Please contact the CC Secretary (Jackie Russell at 517-639-4169) by August 1st as to the number attending from each Chapter. Arrangements have been made to hold the meeting at:

Terrace Bay Inn
7146 P Road
Gladstone, MI 49837

Rooms can be reserved at the Terrace Bay Inn by calling 906-786-7554. Other motels/hotels are available in the area. The program for the August meeting is still in the planning process. I am sure you won’t be disappointed.

Nominations for the election of CC officers/executive board will be held at the August meeting. If you want to nominate someone to fill an office please contact Marie Henderson at 734-529-3657.

The SERA CC has been in existence for 35 years. The scrapbook we have put together (hopefully updated) will be available for viewing at the August and November CC meetings. If you have memorabilia (pictures, letters etc.) from your Chapter or the Coordinating Council please send them to me (P.O. Box 692 Mt. Morris, MI 48458) or bring them to the meeting in August so they can be included in the scrapbook.

Editor’s note: Bob Kopasz is Chair of the Michigan SERA Council. He may be reached at P.O. Box 692, Mt. Morris, MI 48458; phone 810/240-8380
