Chair Talk

July 2006

I have sent a letter requesting that Governor Granholm attend our August 4 CC meeting. I am hopeful that she will attend.

We have not received a response from the meeting Bruce Andrews and I had with the Governor on May 30, 2006. I talked with Stacy Welling and sent her some information. She informed me that they were still seeking numbers/costs from ORS.

Several SERA Executive Committee members attended the farewell open house for Peggy Moczul on June 8. Peggy has moved to Northern Michigan and we indicated that we will miss her and appreciated her concern for our retirees.

I recently spoke with Jan Winters regarding the following:

  • Voluntary Benefits Program. Jan informed me that their staff had met with staff from ORS inquiring as to the possibility of pension deduction for utilizing voluntary benefits. ORS indicated that this could be done but did not have a firm start up date. When more information is available they will meet with us.
  • Medicare Advantage. Ms. Winters said that they were still interested in this program but were still waiting for further information from Blue Cross. We will be meeting when more information is available.
  • Medicare Part D (Prescription Drugs). Jan informed me that the State will still participate with the subsidy program for 2007. They are still looking into the PDP program. In the event any changes may be made SERA will be informed and we will meet with the State.
  • Jan Winters informed me that Civil Service will be interviewing candidates to fill the Employee Benefits Director position recently vacated by Peggy Moczul.

I have scheduled Marjorie Mitchell and Gary Benjamin (Michigan Universal Health Care Access Network) to be our speakers for the August CC meeting. Their program will consist of information regarding their Universal Health Care proposals. I am sure that this program will be of interest to SERA members and all retirees.
