Chair Talk

April 2004

I was contacted by Governor Granholm’ s office in response to our invitation for her to attend the May CC meeting in Lansing. I was informed that the Governor would be unable to attend in May. I indicated that we would then request her attendance at the August CC meeting in Escanaba. I was informed to put the request in writing with all the details and they would respond at a later date. I will be writing a letter to the Governor about the August meeting. I will also write a letter to the Lt. Governor inviting him to the same meeting. I guess we will have to wait and see what type of response we get.

I would take this opportunity to remind anyone that plans on attending the August 20,2004 CC meeting in the Escanaba, to make your lodging reservations as soon as you possibly can. We will be meeting during the week of the Upper Peninsula State Fair. A list of hotels/motels will be included with this month’s mailings to SERA Chapters. See the Delta Chamber of Commerce website for the listing of lodging in the Escanaba area. The Chamber website also contains a list of restaurants.

I have also enclosed with this month’s mailing a Q & A paper distributed by the Michigan Health Purchaser’s Coalition that pertains to the Pharmacy bills that SERA is opposing. I have also enclosed a list of Representatives that make up the Insurance Committee that currently is holding hearings on these bills. I would ask that you contact the representatives and voice your concerns as to the negative effects the bills may have on retirees. Also in the mailing is a statement (prepared by Alvin Whitfield) that will be presented to the Insurance Committee in testimony at a later date.

Editor’s note: Bob Kopasz is Chair of the Michigan SERA Council. He may be reached at P.O. Box 692, Mt. Morris, MI 48458; phone 810/240-8380
